We started our field trip by visiting Egerton University in Nakuru where we started our field trip learning about the Aflatoxin topic and its testing protocol from the experts of Egerton University.
We visited the department of dairy & food science & technology to observe how academic research of Aflatoxin has developed over the years. It was our pleasure to have three lectures on the topic with the professors and a PHD student there.
Our professors were very open to discuss the topic and helped us understand more about the issues surrounding Aflatoxins in Kenya. We also got a chance to ask and clarify our assumptions in the lectures that brought so many valuable insights for us later on.
One of the most exciting parts of the visit was that we got to observe the process of testing Aflatoxins with the equipment they have at Egerton University. Our professor was patient and explained the process to our group of students even though it was a multidisciplinary team with very different levels of understanding in chemistry. It was eye-opening for us even if it had many academic terms and pieces in the process that would require months of deep learning to get familiar with. From this visit, we got some of the significant insights for our final solutions at the end.
